Congress hopes Modi regime takes lessons from Nehru’s foreign policy

Congress hopes Modi regime takes lessons from Nehru’s foreign policy

Gulbarga (Karnataka): Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Wednesday expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been advocating for knowledge and not war, follows the footsteps of the country’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru when it comes to dealing with foreign policy as the latter also believed in the preachings of Buddha.

“He (Prime Minister) said that this country and the world need no fights but requires Buddha’s philosophy. I want to remind that Jawaharlal Nehru preached the path of Buddha as he practiced it throughout his life and he also tried to make peace in Asia,” Kharge told ANI.
“It is good to know people are remembering Ramayan, Mahabharat, Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi ji and I hope by remembering Nehru ji, his foreign policy will also be remembered and followed,” he added.
Prime Minister Modi yesterday likened the war on terror to killing of demon king Ravana.
“This is a land of buddh (knowledge) and not yudh (war). We must resolve to get freedom from these. Buddha’s way or path should remain our ultimate destination,” he said in his speech at the historic Ramlila function at Lucknow’s Aishbagh Maidan. (ANI)

India v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Dharamsala: History favours India in bilateral contests

India v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Dharamsala: History favours India in bilateral contests

NEW DELHI: After India's 3-0 sweep of New Zealand in the Test series, the focus shifts to ODI cricket with the first of five matches being held at Dharmsala's HPCA Stadium on Sunday. For India, MS Dhoni returns to lead while Kane Williamson, New Zealand's skipper, has the unenvious task of trying to rally his team following three Test losses. Statistically, things are not stacked in New Zealand's favour.

While in multi-team tournaments their record on Indian soil is 18-11, the bigger picture is that New Zealand have never won a bilateral ODI series in India. The four series contested between the two teams - in 1988, 1995, 1999 and 2010 - were each won by the home team. The first of these was a 4-0 win for Dilip Vengsarkar's team over John Wright's tourists, following India's 2-1 victory in the Tests. India won by four wickets, five wickets, 53 runs and two wickets before the fifth match in Jammu was abandoned due to heavy rain.

In 1995, Mohammad Azharuddin's Indian team won 3-2. New Zealand took the series lead in Jamshedpur with Martin Crowe scoring an unbeaten hundred, but India won the second and fourth matches - the third was abandoned - to take the advantage back. Lee Germon's team made it 2-2 with a 99-run win in Nagpur, setting up the decider nicely. The sixth ODI was a one-sided affair, with New Zealand bowled out for 126 in 135 overs and India cantering home with six wickets and 108 deliveries remaining.

Four years later, the scoreline was again 3-2 to India, this time led by Sachin Tendulkar. This was the series in which Tendulkar and Dravid etched their names into ODI cricket's record books with a mammoth partnership that until last year stood unchallenged. In the second match in Hyderabad, Tendulkar (186*) and Dravid (153) put on 331 for the second wicket to set up a total of 376/2, which meant victory for India by 174 runs. Like in 1995, the series was locked at 2-2 heading into the last game. India, once again, kept New Zealand for a low score (179/9) and won with ease - by seven wickets.

In 2010, an Indian team missing a few regular players and led by Gautam Gambhir whitewashed New Zealand 5-0. The closest that Ross Taylor's touring side came to winning was in the fourth ODI in Bangalore, where they made 315/7 and had India 108/4, only for Yusuf Pathan to hit an unbeaten 123 from 96 balls to help fashion victory by five wickets. The other matches were won by 40 runs, eight wickets, nine wickets and eight wickets.

Will Williamson's team - ranked third in ODI cricket - be able to buck the trend against India in bilateral? Or will Dhoni's India - one place behind in the rankings - make it five series wins over New Zealand?

US DNC hacking attacks not in Russia’s interest, says Putin

US DNC hacking attacks not in Russia’s interest, says Putin

The scandal that erupted in the United States over allegations Russia hacked Democratic Party emails has not been in Moscow’s interests and both sides in the U.S. election campaign are just using Russia to score points, Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday. The U.S. government on Friday formally accused Russia for the first time of a campaign of cyber attacks against Democratic Party organisations ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election.
And the White House said on Tuesday it would consider a variety of responses to the alleged hacks. “They started this hysteria, saying that this (hacking) is in Russia’s interests. But this has nothing to do with Russia’s interests,” President Putin told a business forum in Moscow. Putin said the accusations were a ploy to divert U.S. voters’ attention at a time when public opinion was being manipulated.
“Everyone is talking about ‘who did it’ (the hacking),” said Putin. “But is it that important? The most important thing is what is inside this information.” The Kremlin said earlier on Wednesday it took a negative view of White House statements about a planned “proportional” response to the alleged cyber attacks. Putin complained that all sides in the U.S. presidential race were misusing rhetoric about Russia for their own ends, but said Moscow would work with whoever won the election “if, of course, the new U.S. leader wishes to work with our country”.
“About a decade ago, they wouldn’t mention Russia at all, because it was not even worth talking about, such a third-rate regional power and not interesting at all. Now Russia is problem number one in the entire election campaign,” said Putin. “All they do is keep talking about us. Of course, it’s pleasant for us, but only partly because all participants are misusing anti-Russian rhetoric and poisoning our bilateral relations.”

Google Doodle pays tribute to ‘Garbo of the skies’ Jean Batten

Google Doodle pays tribute to ‘Garbo of the skies’ Jean Batten

Google's Doodle on Thursday paid tribute to Jean Batten, the 'Garbo of the skies', on her 107th birth anniversary.

New Zealand's greatest aviator, Batten was celebrated around the world for her heroic solo flights during the 1930s. She was born Jane Gardner Batten on 15 September 1909 in Rotorua. Batten's ambition to learn to fly developed in the late 1920s, and this desire led her to become the golden girl of 1930s avi . By 1936, she had made the first ever direct flight between England and New Zealand and then the fastest ever trans-Tasman flight. One of the most famous women of her time, she redefined adventure and glamour.

However, following her success she faded in and out of public view, and eventually died in obscurity in Majorca, Spain, in 1982. She was later buried in a paupers' mass grave on 22 January 1983

Prithviraj turns director with Lucifer; superstar Mohanlal will be the leading man

A day after Onam, the biggest news coming in from Kerala is that Prithviraj is going to direct veteran superstar Mohanlal in a film titled Lucifer. The film written by Murali Gopi, will be produced by Aashirwad Cinemas.
Prithviraj tweeted around noon on Tursday, 25 September:

It is definitely a big ticket announcement as Prithviraj is one of the biggest stars in Malayalam cinema and him directing superstar Mohanlal is out of the blue. A few days ago, Mohanlal’s Oppam released along with Prithviraj’sOozham for Onam, and the fans of both actors went hammer and tongs at each other. Oppam garnered good reviews and went on to become the Onam box office winner by a mile, as Prithviraj’s Oozham carried mixed reports and failed to impress.
Three days after Oozham released, Prithviraj took to Facebook to issue a gentle warning to his fans not to go overboard in condemning or defaming other stars to show their support to him. Prithviraj wrote: “I strongly believe that the box-office success of my film does not depend on the success or failure of other films which release along with it. And when you degrade another actor’s film it causes me a lot of pain and embarrassment. Kindly refrain from doing such things, as my fans have always been my pillar of strength.”
So it has come as quite the surprise announcement that Prithviraj is going to direct Mohanlal.
Lucifer was originally written by Murali Gopy for director Rajesh Pillai, who passed away in February. Pillai made the critically acclaimed hit Traffic and was said to have roped in Mohanlal for Lucifer. The film will be now directed by Prithviraj.
The shoot details are yet to emerge as Prithviraj is currently committed to half a dozen projects. He is currently shooting for Jayakrishnan’s Ezra, Roshini Dinaker’s My Story and Jiyen Krishnakumar’s Tiyaan. Two other films are under pre-production, including RS Vimal’s Karnan. Mohanlal on the other hand is equally busy with three projects he has signed on for.
